After two years and four months we are closing the community diet and exercise class. Numbers have been dwindling for the last six months and we are no longer able to pay the costs involved to keep it running.
The total weight loss since the start is over 100 stone and although, inevitably, there were some gains, we are proud that we have helped our community to raise their fitness levels, and improve their eating habits.

You can still buy the Lauder Lites pack if you are interested in setting up your own community club. Please use the contact form on this website for more information.

First Fridays – will be a series of open house style events held at various businesses after hours on the first Friday of every month. There is no formal presentation however the each month a local community group will be on hand to share information about their activities and it is a really great way to get to know and support your local businesses. The series will kick off on Friday 4th December at Rutherfords of Lauder.

Issues with minor contamination of the Burn Mill site caused by the old gas works have until now prevented further development of the Burn Mill site.

The Scottish Borders Council, as administrators of the site, are in the process of doing a desktop study of the contamination. The aim is to complete a cleanup of the site by November 2009.

LDT are seeking a grant to pay for the cleanup as although the Scottish Borders Council will be administering the cleanup, it will not be funded by the Scottish Borders Council.

LDT has become the first development trust in Scotland to be awarded Phase 2 Powerdown funding. This is as part of the Powerdown consortium which is coordinated by Community Energy Scotland, and funded from the Climate Challenge Fund.

Phase 1 funding has enabled LDT to hire Kimberley Shaw-Walker of Lauder in the role of Community Powerdown Officer, and to investigate the feasibility of Carbon Reduction projects within Lauder.

Phase 2 funding is aimed at implementation. Kimberley has successfully submitted funding applications for a wind generator project, cardboard recycling, and Burn Mill site redevelopment. Kimberley's application has now been used as a reference template for other development trusts within the Powerdown consortium.

Kimberley is also organising Home Energy Audits for a sample of Lauder residents with the aim of identifying ways to improve energy efficiency.

For more information, to get involved, or to request a Home Energy Audit form, contact us. See more info on the Powerdown page.

The BBC has invited villages with fewer than 3000 residents to apply for a Village SOS grant from the Big Lottery fund (BIG). BIG is looking for dynamic business ideas that will transform rural communities and bring lasting change.

LDT has applied and has progressed through the first round of selection from amongst 3000 applications. The next selection round in November will see a shortlist of 30 applications chosen, with 6 finalists to be selected subsequently.

LDT's application for Lauder centres around a musical and cultural event which will be called "Lauder Live".

Gas works had been planned for Lauder High Street in June and July, but following a letter from LDT to Michael Moore MP, a meeting was held with Scottish Gas Networks (SGN), traders and community council.

As a result of this the start date has been delayed until the 3rd of August with the works beginning at the north end of the town away from the businesses. The majority of the traders were happy with the outcome.

The project timetable will be monitored. There is going to be a long period of disruption, approximately 12 weeks depending on what SGN find during excavation.
